We followed the sidewalk out to see the lock and. I had stopped to see the remnants of the old locks a few years ago and then another time I noticed that something was happening at this location. The Canal Society of New York State, in partnership with the NYS Thruway Authority, NYS Canal Corporation, Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Office, NYS Department of Transportation, and Cayuga County, opened the doors to Erie Canal Heritage Park at Port Byron in 2016. This is an informative stop and gives you a chance to learn about the Erie Canal and stretch your legs. You will not be sorry if you stop here. This lock was built as a part of the newly widened Erie Canal and used until about 1917 when the canal was widened once again, and also rerouted to the north which bypassed Port Byron entirely. The lock is an interesting juxtaposition of 19th Century transportation technology with 21st Century communications technology. Without going into an elaborate history of the Erie Canal (tough for me to do) the original "Clinton's Ditch" was "4 and 40," that is, 4 feet deep and 40 feet wide, which soon became too small. The exhibits are great and the people are very attentive and friendly. Right on the thruway, you can come from "town" but you'll have to walk in. Outside is a full lock 52 rock work of the 1850's canal without water or or lock doors. So glad we stopped here to eat lunch on our ride home along the NY Thruway. Traveling down I-90, we saw this exit and took it. You can access this facility from route 31 in Port Byron, or from the I-90 (NYS Thruway) in the eastbound direction only, near milepost 309.

We happily found this by accident while traveling East on the NY Thruway at mile marker 308.4. Which makes zero sense at all from any kind of perspective -- security, accounting, or otherwise. You can get off at... The only access is off the Thruway eastbound. If you're traveling east on the NY State Thruway, and have some time to kill, this is a must-see for anyone interested in history, engineering, the Canal itself and/or preservation in general. Check when it opens before you go. Brave souls pulled over to take a look - there was no exit or parking area, just the shoulder of the road - and the passing cars ZOOMED by! An excellent job. So what's the point?I got an explanation from the docent on duty that doesn't seem to make any sense, except in the mixed up world of New York State government. But don't expect a lot; what's here is limited. We had hoped to stop to use restroom and eat lunch, but it was closed.
