I had this problem with delonghi machine. It still makes a "grunting" noise like it's trying to pump if I hit the hot water button or put the milk tank on and hit the milk button, but it's a fairly subdued noise and absolutely nothing comes out of the steam wand.
I place the wand into the milk and it sounds like it's trying to keep going but cuts out. This can be done by placing the steam wand in a glass of hot water and letting it soak for a few minutes.
It has decided to stop dispensing any water from the steam wand, which affects the obvious function of not being able to froth milk, but even more insidious -- I can now no longer descale it, or even convince it I've changed the filter because it needs to run water through the steam wand when you do that. It is recommended that you run a clean and descale before you commit to a service on the machine though. So just give it a quick push before you start, It’s only a small machine so I reckon it can’t steam forever so I found that using a smaller jug helped as the milk heated up quicker and it didn’t run out of steam.
