The .22 Hornet or 5.6×35mmR is a varminting, small-game hunting, survival and competition centerfire rifle cartridge commercially introduced in 1930.
I’ve used both, and probably lean more toward the hollowpoint stuff these days, especially in the lighter bullets.
That's about it. The .22-250 uses a 1:12” or 1:14” twist rate, limiting the bullet choices to 55 or 60 grains at best.

The .22 Hornet is a 200 yard round basically; it's advantages are that it's quieter and slightly easier on powder than .223.
It does have one drawback—if a drawback it is—in its twist rate. The problem is that a box of factory loads runs somewhere around $60, and offers half the performance of .223 that costs $10 per box. 22 Winchester Magnum, or “22 Mag” for short, was the big dog rimfire for decades. .17 HornetI like the little .17s—from the .17 WSM to the .17 Remington—but my favorite among them is the .17 Hornet. The .22 Hornet was developed by Grosvenor Wotkyns who was with the Ordnance Department at Benicia Arsenal in California. Lighter, faster bullets stay in the air for a shorter period of time and therefore fall less, but for the 22WMR that sweet spot falls on the 30-40 grain bullets. They didn't always allow time to reload, but the 33's got the job done just fine as well. In my opinion, the .22-250 case would serve the heavier .22 caliber bullets very, very well, but alas, it’s not to be.

Tuesday, February 21, 2017, I had just set down my favorite coyote call—a Dan Thompson’s Red Desert Howler—and was regaining my breath after screaming like a tortured cottontail. At short range, between the two cartridges, I'd lean toward the .22 Magnum, using Remington or CCI ammunition with polymer-tipped bullets.
Meus.
Introduced in 1955, the .243 will also use the 95- and 100-grain bullets—perfect for the really windy hunting days—at just about 3000 fps.
I don't consider either to be a good coyote cartridge.
The 17, I'm sure, has it's attributes, I personally don't think coyote is one of it's strong points!
I installed a Timney trigger and a Hogue Overmolded stock, but that’s all I've ever done to it, and it still prints wonderful little groups.
Based on the .250-3000 Savage, this little gem and I have accounted for a good number of coyotes, foxes, skunks, woodchucks et al. Some hunters prefer the FMJ ammunition, to best preserve the hide, while others like the frangible hollowpoint stuff, for the shock factor.
It will drive a 55-grain bullet to over 3800 fps, and that short bullet at that velocity will provide enough hydraulic shock to plant a coyote where it stands. As he quartered down the hill I planted a Winchester 45 grain soft point in his right side and he rolled over once. A much better gun for predator hunting is the CZ 527 or the little Browning bolt action in 22 Hornet. It is suppose to trump the .22mag and the .17hmr according to the tables.

Like most of the other Hornets I've owned this little rifle also liked the Winchester 46gr OPE's a lot, so I usually had some of those along for predators when shooting diggers. A .22 Magnum would be a better choice but a centerfire .22 like the .22 Hornet, the .222, the .223, and certainly the .22-250 are much better options. .222, .204, .223, or .22-250.
I also read a magazine article that said the 22 Hornet “was” the “first choice” for coyote hunting, because a 223 causes too much hide-fur damage (if a person is selling hides) but a 223 can be “hand loaded” with “less powder” to about equal a 22 Hornet. Brass is cheap and the bullets are the same .224 diameter as the other .22 centerfires. My preferred load is a 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip behind 7.4 grains of 2400 using a small pistol primer, something you can get away with when using the Hornet. Leave the 35gr V-maxs for varmints.
This load though, which matches Nosler’s factory length of 1.850”, won’t fit in most rifle magazines due to its length, but if you load this one in the chamber ahead of the rest, or choose a single shot like the H & R Handi-Rifle you should do fine. The new powder was given the title 2400 because it could propel a 45 grain bullet at 2400 fps.

It should come as no surprise the Ruger name is synonymous with value, and its’ AR-556 looks to fit this mold as an entry-level AR-15 with a reasonable MSRP. Welcome to Field and Streams's Answers section.

Whelen got his friend Edwin Pugsley at Winchester to work on a rifle, and in late 1930 the first commercial .22 Hornet was produced in the form of the bolt action Model 54 Winchester. I confess I have never shot a coyote. But, I was trying to make the point that there is really no need to limit oneself in choosing a rifle/caliber for coyote hunting. No idea about factory ammo in the Browning Low Wall... i don't hink I've bought factory Hornet ammo since in the 50's when I started reloading. What has hampered the little cartridge … While 22’s struggle to stay within that measurement within 80 yards (105 with the stinger), the 22WMR bumps it way up to around 110-135 yards depending a lot on bullet weight. The 22 WMR starts with more power more than comparable 17 HMR rounds and due to using much heavier rounds, they hang onto that energy much further out.
But now that 17 HMR has been on the stage for a few years now, pushing tiny little 17-20 grain bullets at 2375-2650, how do they compare? Discussion in 'Hunting' started by know if all, Nov 9, 2013.
